Japanese Writing System

The Language Components

Hiragana

Hiragana is a set of written symbols that represent syllables spoken in Japanese. The word Hiragana itself means rounded because they were originally based on more intricate characters. Hiragana is typically the first syllabary set learned in Japanese.

Katakana

Katakana is identical to Hiragana in pronunciation but it most commonly used for words of foreign origins. The characters themselves are simpler and more square. Katakana is the next step right after Hiragana.
